Description

Crispy, spicy Spicy Popcorn Tofu Nuggets with a fun twist, combining tofu, a flavorful spice mix, and crunchy popcorn for a bold and satisfying snack.

Ingredients

1 block (14 oz) firm tofu, pressed and cubed

1 cup popcorn kernels

1 tablespoon cornstarch

1 teaspoon paprika

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust for spice preference)

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 teaspoon sesame oil

1 cup breadcrumbs (panko for extra crunch)

Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu for 30 minutes to remove excess moisture. Once pressed, cut tofu into bite-sized cubes.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and salt to make the spice mix.
  3. Drizzle soy sauce and sesame oil over the tofu cubes, tossing to coat. Add the spice mix and stir to ensure the tofu is evenly seasoned. Let marinate for 15 minutes.
  4. Pop the popcorn kernels using your preferred method and set the popcorn aside in a large mixing bowl.
  5. Heat oil in a deep skillet or frying pan over medium heat, with about 1 inch of oil. Roll marinated tofu cubes in breadcrumbs, making sure each cube is well-coated, then fry in batches for 4-5 minutes until golden and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to transfer to a paper towel-lined plate.
  6. Lightly crush the popcorn and mix with the fried tofu nuggets, allowing the popcorn to stick slightly for added texture.
  7. Serve hot and enjoy the crispy, spicy goodness!

Notes

Adjust the cayenne pepper for the desired spice level or skip it for a milder version.

For a healthier option, bake the tofu nuggets at 400°F (200°C) for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through.

For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free breadcrumbs instead of panko.

To make these nuggets in advance, prepare tofu and popcorn ahead of time and store separately. Fry the tofu just before serving.

If using store-bought popcorn, crush it lightly before mixing it with the tofu nuggets.
