Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons butter, softened
¾ cup warm water
Vegetable oil, for frying
Honey or powdered sugar, for serving
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the butter and warm water, mixing until a smooth dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Cover the dough and let it rest for 20 minutes.
- Roll the dough out to about ¼ inch thick and cut it into 3-inch squares or triangles.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan to 375°F (190°C) and fry the dough pieces in small batches for 2-3 minutes until golden brown and puffed.
- Remove the sopaipillas from the oil and drain on paper towels.

Notes
For a sweeter twist, toss your sopaipillas in cinnamon and sugar after frying.
Stuff the dough with chocolate chips or fruit preserves before frying for a fun variation.
For a savory version, add grated cheese to the dough or serve with salsa or guacamole.
