Ingredients
- 2.5–3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (or vegetable oil)
- 1 tablespoon white granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon pink salt
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Prepare the Yeast: In a small bowl, mix 1 teaspoon sugar with warm water. Sprinkle yeast on top and let sit for 10 minutes until frothy.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine 2.5 cups flour, the remaining sugar, and salt.
- Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Make a well in the center of the dry mixture. Add the activated yeast and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- First Rise: Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Shape and Second Rise: Punch down the dough and shape into a loaf. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover, and let rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Egg Wash: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Beat the egg and brush it over the top of the loaf.
- Bake: Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Cool: Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
- For added flavor, you can mix in herbs like rosemary or thyme into the dough.
- If you’d prefer a savory twist, add minced garlic and top with butter before baking for garlic bread.
- You can substitute whole wheat flour for all-purpose flour, but the texture will be denser.
