Description

Patty Melts with Secret Sauce are the ultimate comfort food, combining juicy beef patties, melty Swiss and cheddar cheese, and sweet caramelized onions between crispy, buttery rye bread. Topped off with a creamy, tangy homemade secret sauce, this quick and easy recipe is perfect for weeknight dinners, family meals, or a weekend treat. Indulge in this nostalgic diner classic and savor the melt-in-your-mouth goodness!

Ingredients

For the Patty Melts:

1 lb ground beef

1 large onion, thinly sliced

8 slices rye bread

4 slices Swiss cheese

4 slices cheddar cheese

Butter, for grilling

Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Secret Sauce:

1/2 cup mayonnaise

2 tablespoons ketchup

1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  • Make the Secret Sauce: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well and set aside.
  • Caramelize the Onions: In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized (about 15-20 minutes). Set aside.
  • Cook the Patties: Shape the ground beef into 4 equal patties and season with salt and pepper. Cook the patties in the same skillet over medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until cooked through. Set aside.
  • Assemble the Patty Melts: Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. In the skillet, place 4 slices of bread, butter-side down. Layer each slice with Swiss cheese, a cooked patty, caramelized onions, cheddar cheese, and another slice of bread, butter-side up.
  • Grill the Melts: Grill each patty melt for 2-3 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden and the cheese is melted.
  • Serve: Let the patties rest for a minute before slicing them in half. Serve with the secret sauce on the side or drizzled over the top.

Notes

Variations:

Healthier Option: Use ground turkey or chicken instead of beef for a lighter version.

Vegetarian Option: Replace the beef patty with a plant-based burger patty.

Spicy Version: Use pepper jack cheese for a spicy kick.

Storage:

To Store: Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.

To Reheat: Reheat on the stovetop or in the oven until warm.
