Description
Melopita, also known as Greek Honey Pie, is a creamy ricotta-based dessert, sweetened with honey and flavored with cinnamon, vanilla, and lemon zest. It’s a simple yet indulgent treat.
Ingredients
1 pre-made pie crust (or homemade, if preferred)
2 cups ricotta cheese
1 cup honey
3 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Zest of 1 lemon
¼ teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch pie dish.
- If you’re using a store-bought pie crust, place it in the prepared dish. If homemade, roll out dough and fit it into the dish.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, honey, and eggs. Beat until smooth and well blended.
- Stir in vanilla extract, cinnamon, lemon zest, and salt until fully incorporated.
- Pour the ricotta mixture into the prepared pie crust and evenly distribute.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the filling is set and the top is lightly golden brown. The center should be firm but slightly wobbly.
- Cool in the pan for 15-20 minutes, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
- Once chilled, slice and serve. Optionally garnish with extra honey or a sprinkle of cinnamon.
Notes
**Add Nuts**: Sprinkle chopped pistachios or walnuts on top for extra flavor.
**Fruit Add-ins**: Add chopped apples or berries into the filling for added freshness.
**Flavored Honey**: Experiment with lavender or orange blossom honey for a unique twist.
