Description
Irish Potato Farls are a classic Irish breakfast dish made from mashed potatoes, flour, butter, and salt, then pan-fried to golden perfection. These soft, pillowy potato cakes are perfect for using up leftover mashed potatoes and pair wonderfully with eggs, or simply butter and jam. Quick and easy to make, they are a delicious addition to any meal.
Ingredients
- 2 cups mashed potatoes (fresh or leftover)
- 2 tbsp butter, melted
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ cup all-purpose flour (plus extra for rolling)
- 1 tbsp oil or additional butter for frying
Instructions
- Prepare the Potatoes – If not using leftovers, peel, boil, and mash the potatoes with butter and salt. Let them cool slightly.
- Mix the Dough – Gradually mix in the flour until a soft dough forms.
- Roll and Cut – Lightly flour a surface, roll the dough into a ¼-inch thick circle, and cut into quarters.
- Cook the Farls – Heat a greased skillet over medium heat. Cook each piece for 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown.
- Serve – Enjoy warm with butter, jam, or alongside a full Irish breakfast.
Notes
- Use freshly mashed potatoes or add extra butter to prevent dryness.
- For gluten-free farls, substitute with a gluten-free flour blend.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
- Reheat in a skillet or toaster for best texture.
