Description
This simple and spicy Indian Onion Salad is made with thinly sliced red onions, tangy lemon juice, and a blend of bold spices. It’s a perfect side dish to balance rich, savory flavors with its refreshing crunch.
Ingredients
1 large red onion, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon red chili powder
1/4 teaspoon chaat masala
1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, chopped
Salt to taste
Optional: 1 green chili, finely chopped
Instructions
- Peel and thinly slice the red onion. Soak the slices in cold water for 10 minutes to reduce their sharpness, then drain the water.
- Transfer the soaked onion slices to a mixing bowl. Add lemon juice, red chili powder, chaat masala, and salt.
- Stir in the chopped cilantro and optional green chili if desired.
- Toss everything well to ensure the onions are evenly coated with the spices and serve immediately as a side to your favorite Indian dishes like kebabs, biryani, or curry.
Notes
For extra freshness, add slices of cucumber or tomato to the salad.
For a more traditional flavor, use black salt instead of regular salt.
Mix in a pinch of roasted cumin powder for an extra layer of flavor.
Adjust the spiciness by increasing the green chilies or adding cayenne pepper.
Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 1 day, but the onions may lose some of their crunch.
