Description

This homemade applesauce recipe brings the comforting flavors of fall to your kitchen. Made with fresh apples, cinnamon, and a splash of apple cider vinegar, this applesauce is perfect as a snack or topping for various dishes.

Ingredients

4 pounds apples, peeled, cored, and chopped

2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

⅓ cup water

1 teaspoon cinnamon

Pinch of sea salt

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan or Dutch oven, combine the chopped apples, apple cider vinegar, and water.
  2. Cook over low heat, stirring often to prevent burning, until the apples start to soften, about 4 minutes.
  3. Cover the pot and simmer over low heat for 10 minutes.
  4. Uncover, stir in the cinnamon and salt, cover again, and continue simmering for an additional 10 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are very tender and beginning to fall apart.
  5. Remove the pot from the heat and use a potato masher to mash the apples to your desired consistency. For a smoother applesauce, pulse it in a food processor or blend it with an immersion blender.

Notes

Mix sweet and tart apples for a balanced flavor, such as Fuji and Granny Smith.

Add a pinch of nutmeg or allspice for a spiced version.

Sweeten with honey or maple syrup if desired.

Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week or freeze for up to 6 months.
