Description

This homemade hoagie roll recipe creates soft, fluffy rolls with a golden, slightly crispy exterior. Perfect for hoagies, burgers, or hot dogs, these rolls are easy to make and sure to elevate any sandwich.

Ingredients

2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast or instant yeast (2 1/4 tsp = 1 packet)

3 1/2 to 4 cups bread flour or all-purpose flour

2 tbsp granulated sugar

2 tsp kosher salt (use less if using table or sea salt)

1 1/3 cups warm water (divided) (110°F)

1/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature

Instructions

  1. Dissolve 2 1/4 tsp of active dry yeast in 1/3 cup warm water with a pinch of sugar. Let sit for 10-15 minutes until foamy.
  2. In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine 3 1/2 cups flour, sugar, salt, remaining warm water, and yeast mixture. Stir to combine, then knead using a dough hook on medium-low for 10-20 minutes until tacky and no longer sticky.
  3. If kneading by hand, combine ingredients in a large bowl, stir, then knead on a floured surface for 15-20 minutes. Add butter and knead until incorporated.
  4. Transfer dough to an oiled bowl, cover with a tea towel, and proof in a warm place (85°F to 100°F) for 45 minutes to 1 ½ hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Turn dough onto a floured surface, divide into 6-8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 6″ x 4″ rectangle, then roll tightly into a hoagie shape. Place seam side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet and proof for 30-45 minutes.
  6. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Score each roll lengthwise with a serrated knife. Optional: brush with egg white for a glossy finish. Bake for 15-20 minutes, until golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 200°F.
  7. Cool on a wire rack for 20-30 minutes before cutting.

Notes

Different Shapes: Shape into round rolls for burgers or smaller ones for hot dogs.

Flavored Hoagie Rolls: Add herbs, garlic, or cheese to the dough for extra flavor.

Gluten-Free: Use a gluten-free all-purpose flour blend for a gluten-free version.

Freezing: Freeze shaped dough before baking by placing it on a parchment-lined sheet, then storing it in a freezer bag. Bake from frozen, adding 10-15 minutes to the time.

Storage: Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven at 375°F for 5-10 minutes.
