Description

Classic hamburger steak with onions and rich gravy made in one skillet, featuring juicy beef patties simmered until tender in a savory onion sauce.

Ingredients

1 pound ground beef

¼ cup bread crumbs

1 large egg

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

½ teaspoon seasoned salt (for patties)

½ teaspoon onion powder

½ teaspoon garlic powder

⅛ teaspoon ground black pepper

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 cup thinly sliced onion

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 cup beef broth

1 tablespoon cooking sherry

½ teaspoon seasoned salt (for gravy)

Instructions

  1. Gather all ingredients so they are ready to use.
  2. In a bowl, gently mix ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, onion powder, garlic powder, and black pepper until just combined.
  3. Form the mixture into 8 evenly sized patties.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  5. Add patties and sliced onions to the skillet and cook about 4 minutes per side until patties are browned.
  6. Remove patties from the skillet and set aside, leaving onions in the pan.
  7. Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir until evenly coated.
  8. Slowly pour in beef broth and cooking sherry, stirring constantly to form a smooth gravy.
  9. Season gravy with seasoned salt and simmer until thickened.
  10. Return patties to the skillet and spoon gravy over them.
  11. Cover and simmer gently for about 15 minutes, until patties are fully cooked and tender.
  12. Serve hot with onions and gravy spooned on top.

Notes

Use 80/20 ground beef for the juiciest patties.

Avoid overmixing the meat to keep patties tender.

Mushrooms can be added with the onions for extra flavor.

Add a splash of broth when reheating to loosen the gravy.
