Description

Gyeran Bap (Korean Egg Rice) is a comforting and simple dish made with hot rice, a fried egg, and savory seasonings like soy sauce, sesame oil, and butter. This quick, budget-friendly recipe is perfect for busy mornings or a light meal at any time of the day. With a runny egg yolk that mixes beautifully with the rice, it’s both satisfying and delicious. Customizable with toppings like gochujang or kimchi, Gyeran Bap is a versatile and flavorful meal.

Ingredients

For the Rice:

2 cups cooked white rice (preferably sushi or short grain rice)

1 tbsp unsalted butter

For the Toppings:

1 large egg (fried sunny-side-up)

1 tsp sesame oil

1 tbsp soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)

1 tsp sesame seeds

2 tbsp chopped green onions

1 tbsp neutral oil (such as avocado or vegetable oil)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Rice:
In a large bowl, mix the hot cooked rice with butter until well combined. Transfer the buttered rice to a serving bowl.

  • Fry the Egg:
In a non-stick pan over medium heat, add the oil and fry the egg sunny-side-up until the whites are set and the yolk remains runny. For faster cooking, spoon some hot oil over the yolk to help it cook evenly.

  • Assemble the Dish:
Place the fried egg on top of the buttered rice. Drizzle sesame oil and soy sauce over the egg. Sprinkle sesame seeds and chopped green onions on top.

  • Mix and Serve:
Mix the egg into the rice along with the other toppings and enjoy immediately.

Notes

Variations: Add gochujang for a spicy kick, mix in kimchi for extra flavor, or top with roasted seaweed (nori) for texture.

Customizations: This dish is versatile, so feel free to add your favorite ingredients like veggies or proteins.

Substitute: If you don’t like sesame oil, use avocado oil for a milder flavor, but it won’t have the signature nutty taste.
