Description

French Onion Meatloaf is a gourmet twist on the classic meatloaf, featuring savory beef combined with sweet caramelized onions, beef broth, and a gooey cheese topping. With the richness of Gruyère or Swiss cheese, this comforting dish elevates a family favorite with a French onion-inspired flavor profile. It’s an easy, flavorful meal that will impress everyone at your dinner table!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (preferably a mix of lean and fatty)
  • 2 medium onions, sliced
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (plain or Italian)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 packet French onion soup mix
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a loaf pan or line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Caramelize the Onions:
In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter and add sliced onions. Stir occasionally and cook for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and caramelized. Set aside, saving some for topping the meatloaf.
  • Make the Meatloaf Mixture:
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, sautéed onions (reserve some for topping), breadcrumbs, beef broth, egg, and French onion soup mix. Mix gently to combine.
  • Form the Meatloaf:
Shape the mixture into a loaf and place it in the prepared baking dish. Create a well in the center and sprinkle half of the cheese inside. Cover the top with the remaining cheese and top with reserved caramelized onions.
  • Bake:
Bake for 1 hour or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (70°C).
  • Rest and Serve:
Let the meatloaf rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving. Garnish with fresh parsley.

Notes

  • Lean Turkey or Chicken: Swap beef with turkey or chicken for a lighter version of the meatloaf.
  • Add Flavor: For extra flavor, consider adding garlic, thyme, or red pepper flakes to the meat mixture.
  • Vegetables: You can add finely chopped vegetables like carrots or bell peppers for extra nutrition and flavor.
