A classic patty melt sandwich made with juicy beef patties, sweet caramelized onions, melted Swiss and cheddar cheese, and crispy buttery rye bread cooked to golden perfection.
Ingredients
1 lb ground beef
1 large onion, thinly sliced
8 slices rye bread
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
4 slices Swiss cheese
4 slices cheddar cheese
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Form ground beef into four thin oval patties and season both sides with salt and black pepper.
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook onions, stirring occasionally, until soft and deeply caramelized; remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, cook beef patties until browned and cooked through; transfer to a plate.
- Butter one side of each slice of rye bread.
- Assemble sandwiches with cheese, beef patty, caramelized onions, more cheese, and another slice of bread, buttered sides facing out.
- Cook sandwiches in a skillet over medium heat, flipping carefully, until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted.
- Remove from skillet and serve hot.
Notes
Rye bread gives the most classic flavor.
Cook over medium to medium-low heat to avoid burning the bread.
Drain excess grease from the skillet if needed.
Best enjoyed fresh for optimal texture.
