Description

A warm, cheesy French sandwich featuring layers of smoked turkey or chicken, rich Gruyere cheese, and a perfectly fried egg on top—an elegant yet easy dish perfect for breakfast, brunch, or dinner.

Ingredients

1 cup whipping cream (or heavy cream)

50 g Gruyere cheese, grated (or mature cheddar as substitute)

1/8 tsp grated nutmeg

4 slices thick-cut bread (brioche, sourdough, or country loaf)

24 slices smoked turkey or chicken

2 tbsp butter, for greasing the baking dish

2 tbsp oil, for frying eggs

2 eggs, for topping the sandwiches

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F).
  2. Grate the Gruyere cheese and mix it with whipping cream and nutmeg to form the cheese mixture.
  3. Lightly toast the bread slices if desired, then spread a layer of cheese mixture on each slice.
  4. Layer 1–2 slices of smoked turkey or chicken on one slice of bread, add more cheese mixture on top, and cover with the second slice.
  5. Place the assembled sandwich in a buttered baking dish, cheese side facing up, and bake for about 15 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  6. While baking, heat oil in a pan and fry the eggs until the edges are crispy and yolks are runny.
  7. Top each baked sandwich with a fried egg and serve hot.

Notes

For a vegetarian version, omit the meat or replace with sautéed mushrooms or spinach.

Use mature cheddar or Emmental instead of Gruyere for a flavor variation.

Toast the bread before assembling to prevent sogginess.

Add Dijon mustard or béchamel sauce for a more traditional French flavor.

Serve with a green salad, fries, or tomato soup for a complete meal.
