Description

Black Forest Cake is a classic, indulgent dessert that combines rich chocolate cake with tart cherries and a fluffy Chantilly cream. This visually stunning cake is perfect for special occasions like birthdays, holidays, and anniversaries. Its balance of sweet, tart, and creamy flavors makes it a crowd-pleaser and a showstopper at any celebration.

Ingredients

Cherry Cake Filling:

Pitted fresh tart cherries or drained canned sour cherries

Cherry juice

Sugar

Cornstarch

Chocolate Buttermilk Cake:

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

2 cups sugar

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

1 1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

2 eggs

1 1/2 cups buttermilk

1/2 cup vegetable oil

2 tsp vanilla extract

Chantilly Cream:

2 cups heavy cream

1/2 cup powdered sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Cherry Filling: In a pot, combine cherries, sugar, cherry juice, and cornstarch. Boil for 2-3 minutes until thickened. Let cool.

  • Make the Chocolate Cake: Mix dry ingredients (flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt) and wet ingredients (eggs, buttermilk, oil, vanilla). Combine and beat until smooth. Divide the batter between two cake pans and bake at 350°F for 30-35 minutes. Cool, then slice each cake into two layers.

  • Make the Chantilly Cream: Whip heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla until stiff peaks form.

  • Assemble the Cake: Place one cake layer on a platter, spread with cherry filling, top with Chantilly cream, and repeat with remaining layers. Finish by decorating with chocolate crumbs and additional cherries.

Notes

Sweet Cherries: Use sweet cherries if tart ones aren’t available.

Decorative Toppings: Add chocolate shavings or curls for extra flair.
