Description
A classic, simple, and flavorful authentic marinara sauce made with San Marzano tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, and herbs for a rich and versatile Italian staple.
Ingredients
1/2 cup olive oil
3 cloves fresh garlic, peeled and diced
2 (32 oz) cans San Marzano tomatoes, crushed
1 cup water
1 tsp dried basil
1 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1 dried bay leaf
1 whole carrot
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
- Add diced garlic and simmer gently for 1–2 minutes, without browning.
- Stir in crushed tomatoes and water.
- When the sauce begins to simmer, add dried basil, dried oregano, bay leaf, and whole carrot.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Remove and discard the carrot and bay leaf.
- Serve immediately or cool and store for later.
Notes
Add red pepper flakes for heat.
Blend lightly for a smoother texture.
Add fresh basil at the end for extra fragrance.
Simmer longer for a thicker pizza sauce.
Use fresh tomatoes by broiling, peeling, and pureeing.
